EMC’s 2023 Charitable Giving and Community Impact

DES MOINES, Iowa (April 8, 2024)—Today, EMC Insurance and the EMC Insurance Foundation announced their charitable giving and community involvement impact for 2023. Since its establishment in 1989, the Foundation’s charitable giving totals more than $31 million, with the addition of last year’s contributions. EMC also funds numerous community projects and initiatives each year using corporate dollars to provide an even greater impact.

2023 Community Impact Highlights

• Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB): EMC's commitment to DEIB was demonstrated through support provided to many central Iowa organizations for DEIB-related programs and events. EMC supported Iowa Asian Alliance’s CelebrAsian, the Latino Heritage Festival, Living History Farm’s Emancipation Day, the YMCA’s Girls on the Run 5K, In Harmony Farm’s Beginning Farmer program and more. Additionally, EMC continued its support of minority-owned small businesses through sponsorship of the Spark DSM Business Incubator initiative during the Des Moines Farmers Market season.
• Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity - Framing Our Future campaign: EMC significantly invested in the creation and preservation of affordable homeownership in central Iowa. This campaign will transform area neighborhoods and allow deserving local families to experience the stability of an affordable and well-located home, all while building wealth through home ownership.
• Donation Drives: EMC hosted donation events to support United Way’s Stuff the Bus book drive and their Day of Action school pantry hygiene drive, as well as Orchard Place’s holiday gift drive. Executives and team members met at EMC’s corporate office to sort, wrap, and deliver over 400 presents for the children served by Orchard Place, helping provide a happier holiday season for their families.
• Hoyt Sherman Place– EMC Insurance Plaza: EMC focused on improving the accessibility of a community space through support of this Lawn Enhancement Project. The outdoor performance space on the front lawn of Hoyt Sherman Place can be used for free concerts and events for the community. It also serves as an important gathering space for the Sherman Hill neighborhood of downtown Des Moines. 

National Impact

EMC’s 17 branch offices also contributed greatly to their communities through sponsoring events, and hosting fundraisers and donation drives to support local nonprofit organizations. A few examples include:

• The Milwaukee, Wis. office volunteered their time at The Farm, an organization that provides food to southeastern Wisconsin’s food-insecure populations, including low-income children, seniors and families. The team harvested 4,033 pounds of sweet corn during their visit.

• The Kansas City, Mo. office dedicated their time to support KC Pet Project. Their efforts cleaning dog kennels and making canine enrichment treats within the shelter contributed to the well-being of the more than 15,000 animals in the organization’s care.

• The Jackson, Miss. office orchestrated a fundraising initiative to assemble 50 care bags for the local unhoused population. Each bag included vital items like warm clothing, hygiene essentials, snacks and water, offering comfort and support to those in need.
