DES MOINES, Iowa (Oct. 2, 2019)—EMC Insurance Companies today announced the opening of the EMC Overlook at the newly updated MacRae Park just south of downtown Des Moines. The EMC Overlook is a key showcase of the renovated park.
The EMC Overlook is a large triangular viewing platform, 96 feet long which extends from a bluffand40feet over the hillside. It includes a telescope viewing area and informational signs that identify skyline features. LED lights will illuminate the structure at night. The structure provides stunning views of the Des Moines skyline, the Iowa State Capitol building, and the Racoon River, in an area of the park that wasn’t previously easily accessible.
“MacRae Park is one of the oldest and most treasured parks in our community, and EMC is honored to provide its many visitors the EMC Overlook as a new spot to take in the beauty of the Des Moines skyline,” said EMC President and CEO Bruce Kelley.
This morning a dedication was held for the EMC Overlook and the MacRae Park improvements. Other park improvements include new roads, refurbished ponds, reconstructed prairies, a modernized shelter, and the addition of multi-use trails. After the ceremony, the park and EMC Overlook opened to the public.
Established in 1897, MacRae Park is a 62-acre park located on a bluff overlooking the Racoon River at the corner of Southwest Ninth Street and Thomas Beck Road.
